The film premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and opened at the IFC Center in New York City on November 11, 2011. It subsequently played theatrically in Chicago and San Francisco.

The film was a New York Times Criticis' Pick, and the Hollywood Reporter called it an "original and affecting take on the sasquatch legend." Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times proclaimed it "unlike any Bigfoot movie you have ever seen," while Amy Taubin of Artforum Magazine found it to be a "must-see... I believed every minute of it."
