Amid a controversy over the shooting of an apparently subdued terrorist by an IDF soldier in Hebron, the IDF Chief of Staff, Lieut. Gen. Gady Eisenkot, sent a special message to IDF troops on Wednesday, saying that the army will support those who err in the heat of battle with an enemy endangering civillians and soldiers, but will fully prosecute those who deviate from moral and operational stadards.
Israeli military court: Evidence against soldier not conclusive
At the IDF military court’s first hearing of the charges against an Israeli soldier who was caught on film killing an injured Palestinian terrorist in Hebron last week, the judge Lt. Col Ronen Shor found the evidence brought against him inconclusive and extended his remand by three days. The prosecution refused to define the charge against him except that it was serious. The case has set off a storm of controversy, with an opinion poll determining that more than 80 percent justify the soldier’s action. They dispute the defense minister’s determination that the soldier violated IDF regulations and values by shooting dead a terrorist – even after he stabbed a soldier – as he lay injured on the ground. His defense counsel argued that the soldier feared the terrorist was concealing an explosive device under a heavy coat and it was essential to neutralize him finally.
Israel soldier arrested for shooting dead injured terrorist
An IDF soldier was filmed shooting a Palestinian who was lying injured on the ground after he stabbed another soldier at a checkpoint. The soldier was arrested and suspended pending a criminal investigation. His family claimed in his defense that the terrorist was still moving and could have concealed a bomb belt ready to detonate under the heavy coat he was wearing. Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon denounced the soldier’s action as a breach of IDF values. B’tzelem flashed the photo instantly to the world media, international bodies and associated foreign NGOs.
An IDF soldier sustained minor-to-moderate injuries when he was stabbed by two terrorists in the Tel Rumeida area of Hebron on Thursday morning. The terrorists were shot and killed by other soldiers on the scene.
