This is a small, safe and relatively inexpensive back up power system I use for my apartment. The battery/inverter system is from the late 90's and I have replaced the old, original 18 Ahr battery with a new sealed-lead 21 Ahr replacement. There is a build in charge controller. You will need a charger controller with any panel over 5 watts, to avoid over charge and battery damage. This 15 watt solar panel eliminates the phantom power load of the wall charge (14 watts continuous) and saves you 120 Kilo watts a year. You can run a small flat screen LCD TV, laptop, radio, compact florescent lighting and charge your cell phone in an emergency with this back up power system. From a dead charge, it will take about 3-7 days (depending on panel positioning and season) to fully recharge. You can make your own system from items bought on eBay and your local electronics/hardware store.
