Sung by friends of Joey Wilgenbusch at his Memorial Cabaret, Inside Park at St. Bart's, February 10, 2012

My beloved friend, Joey Wilgenbusch, first introduced me to Bon Iver in 2009 when we were living, working, and performing "up in the woods" at Quisisana Resort on Lake Kezar, Maine. We both fell in love with this song in particular--how it hauntingly captured the tall pine trees and the beauty of nature that was all around us.

Joey was the most generous spirit I've ever known, and because of his natural inclination to collaborate with others, he was the most sensitive singer to create music with. It was Joey's idea to arrange transcriptions of music by pop-indie artists like Bon Iver for choral groups, and so this is a tribute to him and an embodiment of his vision. (This was one of his MANY creative visions.)

This song is poignant as it loops, repeating text in a lulling and meditative way that seems to "slow down the time." I love the cyclical nature of it, the deceptive "moment" at the end of each cycle--there is no end in the piece, no finality.

We were all blessed by the companionship of our beautiful friend along this part of the journey, which I believe will continue. Until it does, I will always picture Joey singing, running, dancing, smiling, laughing, and most certainly at peace somewhere "up in the woods."

We love you, Joey.
