Rokyoku or Naniwa Bushi is a style of narrative singing with shamisen developed in the mid-Meiji period. It is musical, but the patterns of the singer and shamisen player are not fixed and are semi-improvised. Although until recently it was very popular, many have looked down on it as simple-minded and full of obvious emotionalism. However, today, more than the popularity of Rokyoku, the problem is the lack of talented performers.
