The number of citizenship applicants and wait times has increased dramatically within the last couple of years.

Immigrants have to wait for a year and half to have Canadian citizenship applications approved as the office that handles the applications struggles with increased demand.
Rabia Amir and her family applied for their citizenship tests and had to wait for more than a year to get the test date. "It is so inconvenient to wait for so long because we cannot travel around and especially if you want to travel within North America," she said.
It becomes a real problem if your travel document and permanent resident card has expired and you want to travel abroad alone or with your family.
Many procedures are involved in the scrutinization process of citizenship applications. If they are overlooked it may cause security and legitimacy problems for the Canadian government.
"As of December 2010, the processing time for the citizenship is 15 to 19 months," said Javed Choudhary, settlement counselor for YMCA Cambridge. "It is important to submit the application and all the documents are complete."
The scrutinization process of citizenship applications is a very sensitive issue. Still Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) is trying its best to process all applications in time. But the citizenship application process can be delayed if your application is filed before time, papers need translation or required documents are missing.
