HP had a demonstration in the Gen8 section of HP Discover showing how you could get 1.6 million transactions per minute from 12U of server space. There's more than 12U worth of gear behind me in the video because they also included the servers running the simulated transactions in the same rack, but that helps illustrate the point. In the previous ProLiant G7 series, the fastest demo I saw was about 1 million transactions per minute from a collection of hardware that consumed 5 full racks worth of space. While ProLiant Gen8 is certainly a big part of the performance boost, the secret to this improved performance is the HP Smart Array P421 card. Combining 5 P421 controllers and 90 SSD drives results in higher performance than was possible using close to 2000 magnetic media drives in the previous generation. The resulting decrease in space used, cooling required, energy required, and potential hardware failure means you get this higher performance at a much lower cost than was possible in past generations of hardware.
