Graduating senior Austin Whitney wears a robotic exoskeleton developed by campus engineers as he walks on stage to receive his Cal degree. Austin was instantly paralyzed in 2007 when a car accident severed his spinal cord.
Also appearing in the video is UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert Birgeneau (blue robe) and Professor Homayoon Kazerooni (black robe).
Austin's walk has been in the works since last fall, when he connected with Professor Kazerooni and his team of researchers. "This technology can be accessible to a large number of people, and that is our mission," said Kazerooni. "We're telling the community that this is possible. This is just the beginning of our work."
