Electrical slip rings perform a very useful task. Namely, they enable a stationary wire/conductor (or set of wires/conductors) to transmit power/ground, data signals, etc., to one (or a set) that's rotating. They are widely used in everything from DIY wind turbines/generators, amusement park rides, assembly line machines, to even the most humble of brushed DC motors. Essentially, electrical slip ring style connections are widely used and have a multitude of applications. However, understanding how they internally/mechanically function and especially how to build one's own is often not quite so clear to those just starting out in electronics, or in some cases, to even those who've been working with various electronic projects for a while. Slip rings are the solution to a problem that one might not know about until the very moment he/she encounters it (i.e., how can I reliably connect a stationary wire/conductor to one that's rotating?). This video is intended to help those who may have encountered this a problem and/or are interested in not only understanding the basic concept behind slip rings but also possibly interested in building their own.
