This is what I call the "Gar Tarp." I made it because I wanted something cheap, fast, versatile, packs small and would keep me warm and out of the weather. This is the system I use now. This is only one configuration of the tarp. Most of the other configurations are well known.

This method can be done anywhere and doesn't need trees or cordage. The other reason I like it is because it has a floor, roof AND sides and an opening for the warmth of the campfire. The stakes and poles can easily be replaced with sticks found lying around.
