Transcript: The conclusion is the final paragraph in your essay, your final thoughts should be your last few sentences within your conclusion. The reason why it’s important to write final thoughts is because you want your audience to keep thinking about what you wrote after they finish reading your essay. If after they finish reading they would have forgetting everything you said, it wouldn’t have been a very effective piece of writing, and so in order to keep your reader thinking about what you wrote it’s important to write some powerful final thoughts. Remember, you don’t want to include new information here that requires evidence and development. You’re just adding a few ideas that make your reader think. The three main types of final thoughts are suggestions, implications, and observations. Let’s take a look at these three in action.We’ll keep with the essay topic about pizza and how it’s America’s favorite dish: Why not taste America’s favorite dish and have ti for your next meal?” Next, let’s try an implication: “Pizza’s soaring popularity in America means that we will continue to see innovations in flavors and styles.” You can see the implication here is something fairly light. If it feels too complicated and required a lot of support, then it would be a bad final thought because your reader would be thinking “Huh? He needs to prove that or he needs to show that to me. So, try to keep your implications fairly light. Finally, let’s try making observation: “Although pizza was invented in Italy, America is its new global capital.” Again, you can see that I’m not introducing any new information that’s too heavy and requires support. This observation really just comes naturally from the essay’s points about pizza being so popular in America. To recap, your final thoughts are very important to keep your reader thinking and engaged in the topic and the points that you’ve made. However, you can’t have your reader think too heavily and have them questioning what you write. It has to be very smooth and follow naturally from the point you’ve already made. There’s a lot of flexibility in writing final thoughts, so you should try to experiment and see what works for you.
