Sneaker Waves are waves that can surprise beach goers by running up significantly farther onto a beach or over outcroppings than other waves. Sneaker Waves are preceded by lulls in wave activity of up to 30 minutes. Beach goers encountering Sneaker Waves can be knocked down and dragged into the ocean. With coastal water temperatures in the 50s, survival can be difficult once in the ocean. Large breaking waves can develop without warning so beach goers should watch the waves and avoid rocky outcroppings and jetties. Remember, never turn your back on the ocean!
