In Nepal, the Kamalari system of bonded labor sees girls as young as six working as maids in wealthy homes. Often far from home, the girls are isolated and vulnerable to physical violence and sexual abuse.
In 2005, Plan began working with local partners in Nepal and since then has helped rescue and support nearly 2,000 girls in one district alone. The younger girls are helped back to school or given support with their education, while older girls are given vocational training and business start-up support.
