It's too bad he didn't know about English Quest...

Students who compete in Utah English Quest find that learning can be a whole new experience.

(On camera)

Hi, I'm Logan Tarantino. In 2009, I was lucky enough to win first place in the Utah English Quest movie trailer competition.

English Quest events take place here, on the Weber State University Campus. This is where you can compete in writing, speaking, acting, filmmaking, poster designs, photography ... nearly anything that involves English.

To get into English Quest, you'll want to start preparing early.

For some ideas on your area of competition, take a look at this sample of skills that Utah students brought to English Quest in recent years.

Most English Quest competition subjects will be in one of four groups:

Art, Writing, Tests, and Performance.

For example, dramatic readings are challenging for the performers...

...and they are fun for your live audience.

If you like to stand out on your own, prepare a memorized reading or poetry...

...or, rehearse one of the classics, like Shakespeare....

...performed either in a group scene, or a monologue.

If the stage scene is not your thing, maybe you're a poet.

Here, in Poetry Slam, performers volunteer their own work before a more casual audience setting in The Lounge.

Students of visual arts compete in English Quest, too. You might produce a creative book cover, poster, or a photo essay.

Writers can submit a character sketch, their own poetry, persuasive writing, or a personal narrative.

Video entrepreneurs entertain audiences, too, as they compete with their own productions.

And what would an English competition be without some head-to-head testing, such as an editing test...

literature and vocabulary tests...

and a good, old-fashioned spelling bee.

Now is the time to start planning your English Quest event.

I'll see you this year, at English Quest!
