In the latest issue of Development (Vol 144, Issue 7), Makoto Suzuki, Naoto Ueno and colleagues from universities in Japan and Canada present an analysis of calcium dynamics during neural tube development in the frog Xenopus laevis.
Using live imaging and genetically encoded calcium and cytoskeleton sensors, alongside chemical and gene knockdown manipulations, the authors find a link between intracellular calcium dynamics and the apical constriction that drives neural tube closure.
