Design an automatic traffic lights controller similar to the one found in Doha near
Khalifa Stadium for Tennis and Squash at the intersection of Al-Markhiya street with Al-Bida street. In such controller, each road is given a fixed amount of time with a timer displaying remaining seconds before switching to red. To simplify the problem, assume that for each road, both ways open at the same time with cars having an option to cross the junction or turn right, no crossing left or U-turn is allowed. However, the amount of time given to each road is not fixed but is proportional to the amount of cars initially waiting when the lights went green. To detect number of cars waiting for each road, sensors will be put on varying distances, a sensor at 1 meter away from the junction, another at 10 meters, another at 20 meters (for each road). If only the 1-meter sensor is asserted (or no sensors are asserted at all) the green light stays for 10 seconds with the counter displaying number of seconds remaining. When the time reaches 3 seconds, the green light should flash continuously until it reaches 0 when it should turn off and the red lights should turn on. For the same road, if the 10-meter sensor was asserted the green light would stay for 30 seconds and the same scenario repeats. If the 20-meter sensor were asserted, time would be 60 seconds. In all cases and when the
time reaches 0, the other road should wait for 3 seconds with the red flashing then turn green and its counter will start counting in the same manner of the first road (starting at 10, 30 or 60 seconds). There is an exception to these timing schemes that happens when no sensor of the other road is asserted (no cars are waiting on the other road) where the green will stay forever. In such case, once any sensor is asserted on the other road, the counter is set to 60 counting down to 0. Use 6 input switches to simulate sensors, 2 green and 2 red LEDs to simulate lights and 4 7-segment displays to simulate both counters.
