Every year 100 billion plastic bags are used in the European Union, around 200 bags for every EU citizen. Only a small percentage of these are recycled, meaning literally billions end in rubbish dumps or, more likely, European seas every year.

This plastic pollution has a huge environmental impact, affecting not only marine ecosystems but also animal and even human health.
