Watch in high quality (480p). Also recommended to watch this in a dark place to enjoy it to the max due to it being an evening video. In this video, it shows our area get drenched with a line of thunderstorms from a late season storm system throughout the evening hours of Thursday and lasting until the early morning hours of Friday (April 12-13, 2012). This line of storms actually affected most of the San Francisco Bay Area. Even areas south of San Francisco, such as South San Francisco, San Bruno, Pacifica, Millbrae, Daly City and Burlingame issued a severe thunderstorm warning until 8:45 p.m. Thursday evening. This thunderstorm event also shattered countless rainfall records. A lot of areas around the bay received at or above this month's entire average monthly rainfall within a day! Ultimately, there were at least 750 recorded lightning strikes in San Francisco and Monterey Bay. This video only showed a fraction of what really happened this evening in the region...
First, the video shows me rush home from Stockton, CA. By the way, parts of the Central California Valley was under a region of a high severe thunderstorm probability on Thursday afternoon/evening. This was why I came to Stockton. Unluckily, no severe weather but I did see skies that showed and warned that a line of possibly strong thunderstorms was well on it's way, especially to the San Francisco Bay Area.
While on the way home, I texted my cousin Gretchen who was back home in San Jose and she said there was flashes of lightning (and thunder) everywhere! So I rushed home. While along I-580 along Altamont Pass, rain, maybe some small hail, started to fall. I can even see a thunderhead cloud with an anvil to the southwest while on the pass, lit by the city of Livermore on the other side! Eventually the drenching downpours was encountered while descended towards Livermore, CA. I was on the leading edge of the line of storms!
The drenching rains continued until I arrived home. But once I finally arrived back home in San Jose and exited I-680...BOOM! A super bright lightning flash lit the skies just above me! I didn't get it on film but another lightning flash lit the skies above. The heavy rains continued as occasional lightning/thunder lit the skies around Silicon Valley. Then it was midnight, Friday, April 13, 2012.
Once back home, I had trouble parking my car since I had no parking. While trying to park, the lightning continued. Afterwards, I made it inside safely and there, I continued to watch and film the lightning/thunderstorms right outside my bedroom window. This went on until around 2 a.m. I also added some slow motions to the best lightning flashes/strikes. There was also a distant cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning! A total of approximately 31 strikes/flashes of lightning has been caught on this video. Can you spot all of them?
What a rare, very stormy evening this was for the majority of the San Francisco Bay Area, including San Jose, CA!
**By the way, this was my very first time ever driving, on the road during a thunderstorm and yes with the lightning and thunder involved!! :)
