They will eat anything and live anywhere. Coyotes have been migrating east for decades and they are now documented to have a presence in every county in Florida. In Pinellas County, these adaptable animals have made themselves at home, living off of fruit, insects, garbage, pet food and small animals. Coyotes are generally shy of people but sometimes they lose their natural fear of humans when people encourage them to stay around their neighborhoods by unknowingly feeding them and making them feel welcome.
In this video, Extension Agent Lara Miller explains the background and habits of coyotes and shows residents how to coexist with wildlife. She explains that when coyotes are present, the best thing that people can do is act aggressively toward the animal and make them feel unwelcome. Shout at them, make loud noises, spray the hose on them, even throw stones. Above all, do not leave food, including small animals, outside the home. Coyotes can be spotted in parks, golf courses and even walking down the street at times, but when humans learn to accept that coyotes are here to stay, they can learn to keep the wiley coyote at bay.
