Lightnin' Hopkins - Mary - Jim Bruce Blues Guitar Lesson Preview

When starting out to search for those ideal guitar lessons, most people used to use the great 'G', and 'Google it'. More and more searches for everything imaginable are
performed on Youtube, and now it's the second most favorite search engine after Google itself. Like Google, the number of items returned for a keyword like 'blues guitar lessons' is impressive - how to choose the instruction that's best for you? Youtube guitar lessons feature all manner of styles and teaching levels, both paid and for free.

Many of the big boys in selling guitar lessons have developed a really effective marketing format that employ many kinds of psychological hooks to get you to pay. Barely a beginner? That's OK - you'll be playing like a pro in 3 days. Know a few chords and can strum a bit? We'll take your playing to the next level. Experienced player? This instruction will turn you into Eric Clapton, and you get the picture. Amongst my favorites is the ubiquitous advert 'The 3 Awful Mistakes That Most Guitarists Make", or something like that, which is pretty hard to resist, it it has to be said. Truth is, playing good guitar takes practice, dedication and time. Naturally, the learning thing could be made quicker with clear-cut instruction and faithful blues guitar tabs.

Guitar tablature is the fundamental characteristic of excellent guitar lessons. It doesn't have to be extremely complex at all, with just elementary notation showing finger movements and chords. Some tablature just goes into too much detail, attempting to capture the feel and style of authentic blues picking, which it can't possible do! This brings us to the 2nd characteristic of the best blues guitar lessons - the teacher should be able to play the music very well (and that tab should adequately indicate what he does.)

Guitar tablature by itself just can't translate that delicate pause, or the bass that is a little off-beat when needed to complement the lyrics. Of course, the tab can indicate that a monotonic thumb strike is muted or damped with the hand's palm, but doesn't tell us that this damping effect itself isn't continuous, but changes in quality as the pressure of the palm on the strings is continually being changed according to the flow of the song.

Take your time when looking for any teachings, whatever kind you are looking for. The Chinese have a saying 'a year engaged in doing nothing but finding the right instructor is very well spent'. That's about right. You might not need to spend a year for your search, but choose with care and ignore the hype. Don't think that you'll improve in just a few short days weeks, take it easy, don't be hard on yourself and most importantly, enjoy the music and the journey.
