Candidate for Congress (WA-9), Dick Muri introduced legislation to verify worker eligibility using E-Verify back in July. Yesterday, the Pierce County Council unanimously approved County Ordinance 2009-74s which requires the county to verify the eligibility of all employees of Pierce County as well as all contractors who win a public works bid worth $100,000 or more. Any other contract worth $25,000 or more must also verify employee eligibility.
E-Verify is an online program run by the Department of Homeland Security which allows employers to check the eligibility of new hires almost instantaneously using information they already gather from federal form I-9.
The United States accepts more people from other nations than all other countries combined, said Councilmember and Congressional Candidate Dick Muri, the ordinances prime sponsor. E-Verify gives us a way to ensure that U.S. jobs go to those who have earned the right to work here.
The type of leadership Candidate Muri has shown on the Pierce County Council to save jobs for U.S. workers and curb the flow of illegal immigration into Pierce County is the kind of leadership we need for the 9th Congressional District in Washington DC.
