Attorney General Eric Holder announced the Justice Department's plan to no longer pursue mandatory minimum prison sentences for non-violent drug offenders.

Holder said that certain "drug offenders who have no ties to large-scale organizations, gangs, or cartels will no longer be charged with offenses that impose draconian mandatory minimum sentences."

As part of the "Smart On Crime" initiative, those convicted of low-level offenses will be diverted to drug treatment programs instead.
