At age 13, Thuy Nguyen arrived as a refugee to Canada. One of 15 siblings to cross the Pacific in 1975, the family was sponsored under Canada’s newly established private refugee resettlement program- meant to aid those fleeing conflict in Vietnam. After establishing a successful life as a designer in the country that welcomed her, Ms. Nguyen is repaying the favour forward. She and her partner are sponsors to a Syrian family- among them a daughter of the same age as when Thuy made her journey. Keenly aware of the challenges facing the newly arrived family, Thuy and her partner Michael have committed to becoming a safety net for the family as they adjust to their new life in Canada.
