A multi-millionaire by 1980 with nearly a hundred patents under his belt and the unmatched veneration of his industry peers, Pitroda has become the embodiment of the American success story. He is the founder and CEO of Illinois-headquartered C-SAM, Inc.

He is currently the adviser to the Indian prime minister on public information infrastructure and innovations. His reputation as a telecom inventor, management guru, and entrepreneur has been built over four decades in the telecom and IT industries. He is credited with having laid the foundation for India's tech revolution in the 1980s as technology advisor to the Indian prime minister.

Uttara Choudhury spoke to Pitroda at the "One Globe 2012" conference in New Delhi and asked him to describe what he thinks led to the rich mix of roles in his career, what value he places on studying abroad and thinking outside the box.
