I: Allegro II: Lento III: Molto vivace

Members of the Stamic Quartet play this remarkable work at the 2012 Indian Summer in Levoca Festival.

Klein studied in Prague with Alois Haba until in 1940 until the Nazi legislation forced him from Charles University. He earned a living under a variety of pseudonyms as a pianist before being sent to Terezín (Theresienstadt) in 1941, from where he was sent to Auschwitz and thence to Fürstengrube, where he died in January 1945. The few works he left are a testimony to his outstanding gifts -- visitors to the Festival may remember Ivo Kahánek's performance of Klein's Sonata a couple of years ago. Klein's Trio is the last work he wrote, completed nine days before his deportation to Auschwitz. The work is virtually a tribute to the music of Klein's native Moravia -- and the second movement is in fact a set of variations on a folk-song.
