(List of ideas mentioned placed below)
I put together some of the ideas surrounding the hyperloop concept that Elon Musk has talked about. Perhaps I have some ideas that are accurate in my model/concept, but hopefully I will be pleasantly surprised by something I didn't think about!
Feel free to comment, critique, and question :)
List of Ideas.
1a) Levitation achieved through ground effect and/or in combination with the pod producing air below it, like a skirtless hovercraft (upside down air-hockey table). (unlikely alternative option is to have the ground of the tunnel blow air up).
1b) (Aug 1st edit) I am on the fence with the pod being round or flat bottomed. Round has some benefits for banking angles and ease of construction/planning, noted by Skysteiner in the comments. Elon also said 2m diameter and diameters are usually applied to circles, and thus cylinders for pods. In any case, we will see!
2) Propulsion through electro-magnetic rails on the walls, similar to a railgun.
3) Energy produced through roof-top solar panels and grid electricity.
4) Wind resistance greatly reduced through internal high-speed winds. High wind speeds maintained through possible electric turbines, AND further increased by pods, i.e. the wind resistance on each pod will actually help to increase the overall internal wind speeds of the tunnel there for partially conserving energy. Could be simpler to forgo electric wind turbines and solely rely on the pods to increase and decrease the wind speeds.
5) Energy recovery through running turbines in reverse, siphoning off some wind speed at night. Additional energy storage through running heavy pods in loops and then slowing them down.
6) Prefabricated sections of tunnel made on assembly line, for elevated or at grade installation.
