This hillock is enveloped in a myth. Legends have it that this portion situated in Muttara is actually a portion of the hill that bore the medicinal herb, Sanjeevini, which was carried by Hanuman from the Himalayan Ranges to Lanka, in order to revive Lakshmana who was injured in a battle against Ravana. It is believed that this portion fell from the hands of Hanuman at this spot and hence the name Maruthimala. A number of monkeys thrive in this place and it is believed that this is also because of the story of Hanuman.
