OUR Walmart leaders from across the country descend on Bentonville for the annual shareholders meeting. Hear are some of the highlghts:
1) OUR Walmart member Jackie Goebel, from Store #1167, delivered an amazing speech in front of 15,000 attendees on behalf of a proposal put forth by her and three other Associates. The proposal calls on the board to ensure that incentives in the executive bonus formula are aligned with the long term success of the company, since Walmart executives seem to receive generous bonuses even though the company's performance has lagged behind other retailers. Jackie received cheers from across the stadium when she talked about how Associates are understaffed, working to the bone with less hours and lower bonuses.
2) Walmart tried to silence OUR Walmart members again during the Question and Answer period by blocking us from sitting with other shareholders to ask questions to senior management. During this period, we called on senior management to end all retaliation against Associates who speak out; we asked why so many associates have to rely on government assistance when they work for the largest retailer in the world; and we requested copies of all Walmart policies.
3) In October 2011, Karen Casey refused to meet with us at Home Office. This time she came out to the parking lot and met with us. Staff from HR had an Open Door with each one of us about the issues we all share and calling for an end to retaliation. All of us who went are getting follow up calls and already some have had unjust coachings removed.
4) OUR Walmart members were able to connect with thousands of other Associates from across the country and around the world because of the common challenges we face in our stores: understaffing, not enough hours, and affordable health care for our families. We were amazed at how open and receptive Associates were.
It was clear EVERYONE in Bentonville wants to improve our company. And it can only be done once associates come together and speak out.
