Beethoven did not give this sonata the popular title "Moonlight." Beethoven gave it the description "Sontata quasi una fantasia," a sonata that is almost a fantasy (a style of music free from formal structure). The music editors gave it the name "Moonlight" after Beethoven's death.

Beethoven dedicated this piece to the Countess Giulietta Guicciardi. She was his piano student, and he was deeply in love with her.
