Bradley Beach Press Conference, 1-14-2013 (Transcript Below)

Governor Christie: one of the things that's been the most, the most gratifying in the last couple weeks is coming to places like Bradley Beach and seeing the enthusiasm of the workers who feel like they're really doing something that matters, that matters not only for today and tomorrow but for future generations of people who are going to enjoy Bradley Beach and other beach communities up and down the Jersey Shore, but also to see the incredible enthusiasm of the residents in these towns who know that we're in for a bit of a haul to get all this done the right way, but that we're making progress already. Debris being cleaned up and gone from nearly half the towns that were impacted now. Moving now to clean up the debris in our waterways. I was talking to some councilmember here about that. We're already starting to get debris cleaned up from Barnegat Bay. Remember something: over 1400 vessels were sunken or abandoned in our state's waterways during Sandy. In Mantoloking alone, fifty-eight buildings were washed into Barnegat Bay. Fifty-eight buildings washed into Barnegat Bay completely. Automobiles, everything you can imagine is sitting in our waterways. We need to now get those removed. As we continue to work on those, that's going to make our waterways more navigable for everybody, and hopefully allow us to have some time this summer where we can have a boating season like we normally have in the waterways here around the Jersey Shore.

So all of that work is going on. It's going on as we speak. We appreciate the support that we're getting from all of you, and we're going to continue to work every day. There's nothing—you know, people can talk about all kinds of other issues, but the fact of the matter is, there's nothing more important to the future of New Jersey than to rebuild the Jersey Shore and to get ourselves back to a new normal here in the state, and that's what this governorship is going to be focused on for every day that I have left as governor, I'm going to be focused on making sure that this gets done the right way and that you get your lives back to normal as quickly as possible.
