Nervous as I was to step up on to the stage to bring God's Word to His people, I thought my knees would buckle under the weight of uncertainty! I had preached once before and I had no idea how I would handle a group of 500+ people who had come to see "Bruffey's Son" preach. I had to figure out a way to break the ice - my dad always wore bow ties; so much so that bow ties and the name "Bruffey" were often synonymous! So that was the purpose behind the HUGE bow tie. . .
My father was very well-known within the Deaf Baptist community (outside of it, too, but primarily within Deaf Baptist circles - many Gallaudet students from about 1968 until 1995 remember him well). The names of his children were NOT well-known for a long time, haha. Often we were only called 'Bruffey's Daughters" or "Bruffey's Son". Thus the joke (another icebreaker!).
