Mr. J.P. Van Noppen retired this year from teaching grammar, linguistics, metaphors, Critical Discourse Analysis and pragmastylistics at the ULB. For the occasion of his last, "valedictory" lecture, my friends and I got this little song show together... Here are the words:

"Gimme, Gimme, Gimme... J-P!"

I'm so lost
I just read David Crystal in my room all alone
Oh I hate not understanding on my own

(A) scrapbook to be written for the end of the year
I will at least have to work for ten hours
Is there a soul out there
One who could hear this prayer

Gimme Gimme Gimme J-P to learn better
No one else can help me chase the mistakes away
Gimme Gimme Gimme J-P to learn faster
The only way to speak english at the end of the day
(ABBA and Laura Crowet)

"Like a Student"

I made it through the BA years
Somehow I made it through
Didn't know how much I'd learnt
And all that thanks to you

I was beat, incomplete
Make me wise, yeah you make me smart
Cause you made me feel,
Yeah you made me feel
Shiny and new

Like a student
Taught for the very first time
Like a student
When your teachings
Make me so bright.
(Madonna and Nicolas Pablo Angel Legros)

Young man, you can't read what you wrote
I said, young man, the mess you call your coursenotes
I said, young man, cause it's full of wrong quotes
There's no need to be unhappy

Young man, there's a course you can go
I said, young man, there's brilliant slideshow
With bodyshops, cherrypies and God knows
That is NOT in the ""syllabus""

It's fun to study for VNJP
It's fun to study for VNJP
You must read the Mouton, and also David Crystal
Until you understand it all
It's fun to study for VNJP
It's fun to study for VNJP
Study Grices's principles, and also metaphors
There is information galore.
(Village People and Nicolas Pablo Angel Legros)

Today is gonna be the day
That we have to say goodbye to you
But do not worry we know we still have an exam with you
We do believe that everybody will get more than two
At least we hope so

During these past four years
We learned what kind of teacher you were
Ringing mobiles or cell phones
Out the window they would get thrown
They say you are a very tough pro-pro-professor
They have to look deeper

You gave your life for the sake of your students
Loving husband, father and also singer
Grices principles, metaphors,
All those things we learned
Thanks to you

(For all of this we'll) miss you
Be sure that we won't forget you
'Cause after all
you're so rock 'n' roll
(Oasis and Laura Crowet)

"The Course Must Go On"

Empty classrooms... What are we studying for?
Abandoned office... I guess we know the score!
Van Noppen...
Does anybody know why you are leaving us?

One more Professor... We'll never see again
No more metaphors... And no more CDA
Van Noppen...
But I guess "that's the way (that) the cookie crumbles"...

(The) course must go on!
(The) course must go on!
Inside our hearts are breaking
We hate to see you leaving but our knowledge...
Still stays on.

Whatever happens... We learned so many things
A homophone is... Not a gay telephone
And things like...
(you can) bring a horse to water but you can't make it drink

Pragmastylistics... Have no secrets for us
Please give us good marks... Prepositions are words
(That) we promise
Never to end any of our sentences with...

(The) course must go on!
(The) course must go on!
How we'll miss no more to hear
How you say "complément circonstanciel"...
Van Noppen
(Queen and Hadrien Van Eerdewegh)
