How to Import Custom HTML Email Template from Postcards to Intercom

Hey everyone. In this video, I will show you how to import a custom email template created in Postcards directly to Intercom.

Open the Postcards App and let’s prepare our template for Intercom. First, insert all of the required tags into your newsletter. Intercom has a few required tags, the first one I have inserted here, normally this is the default content generated automatically by Intercom. Tthe second tag is located in the footer and it’s an Unsubscribe button tag. I have inserted it here, and it will be converted by Intercom to an unsubscribe link.

Because the Intercom doesn’t host images, I will show you how to upload your images to Amazon S3 and use them for Intercom email campaigns. Also, you can upload the images any way you want, the important step is to change the URL to these images. Ok, let’s see how to do this in an easy way. Export the template and open the archive. The images are located in the “Images” folder and we’ll upload these images to Amazon S3, remember you can use any other service to host your images. So, open the Amazon S3 website and click the Upload button, drag and drop the images in this manner and wait. The images are hosted on Amazon server. Now, choose all of the images and click the Actions button, choose the “Make public” option so your images can be shared in public. Click on the logo image and copy the link to the image. Continue by opening the Postcards app and edit the first module. Here in the right sidebar choose the Direct URL and paste the copied link. Ok, your images are loaded directly from Amazon server. Now let’s continue to change each image in the same way, I will copy the images URL from Amazon server and paste them here in Direct URL option in the Postcards App. I’ll skip ahead because this gets repetitive. Save the template and export the archive. We have to export a new archive because we’ll use the email template with the new image URL.

Open the Intercom website and click the Settings icon. In the new page click Messages and chose the Email Templates. Here you can create and store custom email templates. Ok, click the “Create new template” button. Here you will see ready-made HTML code generated by Intercom, change the title of your email template, open the index.html file in a code editor or text document and copy the HTML code. Go back to the Intercom website and remove the default code, paste your code here and on the right side you will see the preview version of your template. The template looks strange now, because Intercom prepopulated the Content tag with their default content. Don’t worry about this, this part of newsletter will not be visible to your clients or subscribers, I will show you a demo in a few minutes. The rest of the email template looks good, so we can save it. Now I will show you how to setup an email campaign in Intercom. Click the Messages icon and choose “Campaigns”. Click the “New campaign” button and start to setup your campaign. I will leave default a few steps because in this video I am only covering email templates. Click the Done button, and “New auto message” and then choose the “Select your channel”, click the “Email” option and the Done button. Now, we’ll see how to choose your custom email template. Click right here in this box and you will see a new option to setup the campaign. From the “Email template” dropdown menu, choose your template, I chose my black template from this list, and here it is in preview mode. You can see, the Content tag transformed to a text area where you can write your text, but we’ll just remove this. In a few seconds you will see how the email looks directly in my inbox. Write the email subject and Send a test email by clicking this button. The email is sent, now let’s check the inbox. Here is my email, open it. It looks very good, exactly how I built it in the Postcards App. The images and the text are here, nothing changed by Intercom system and the design has not changed either.
