Last October, Hurricane Sandy ravaged large swaths of the East Coast. Fortunately, our business was not affected, but the same cannot be said about my community, Little Ferry, NJ and The Meadowlands region. As we were planning our Thanksgiving, we felt compelled to share the joy of the holidays with those who cannot.
We brainstormed the Meadowlands Basket Brigade.
OUR INITIAL GOAL was to deliver 42 food baskets for families affected by Sandy.
THE FINAL RESULTS WERE: 220 + volunteers 20k + raised 600 + happily surprised families!
We included in each basket a note that read, "This comes to you from someone who cares about you. All we ask is that you take care of yourself well enough to be able to do this for someone else one day."
It was rewarding to see the look of surprise on the faces of the families in need; they went through adversity; finally, on this holiday where everybody comes together to give our blessings, they got a little bit of reprieve. As families asked us about the provenance of the baskets, we say, "It's from a friend. We are just the delivery people."
