Philippine police used tear gas to disperse about 1,000 anti-U.S. protesters outside the U.S. embassy in Manila on Wednesday (October 19).

A police van was filmed ramming into activists gathered outside the U.S. embassy in Manila. At least three demonstrators were injured.

Dozens more were injured in subsequent clashes with police.

Officers blasted protesters with water cannon and struck them with their batons, later chasing the activists and bashing their jeepneys as they fled.

Police said the activists did not have a permit and they broke the windscreen of a police vehicle, prompting the violent dispersal.

The activists were protesting against a military pact signed two years ago that allows more U.S. troops and storage of equipment inside Philippine bases.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has railed ferociously on longtime ally United States, announcing plans to stop annual joint military exercises and review the

military pact.

He has complained of criticism of his deadly war on drugs by several parties including U.S. President Barack Obama.
