Baton Twirling Coach -- This video is our twirling routines that we would perform but what you don't see is who actually helps to perfect and create the routine in the first place. Baton twirling is a beautiful thing to watch but the real creator of it is behind the scenes holding the camera. She is our coach and is responsible for the performance you have just watched. Although all coaching jobs are similar, no type of coaching is more difficult than baton. First of all in order to teach all the tricks in the routine the coach has to show/demonstrate the trick to us first. Secondly you have to have rhythm, experience, patients, dedication, and choreography. Yes throughout this video we were criticized by her and what we were and were not doing wrong, something every coach does.
How does culture fit into all of this? As a matter of fact it is a very cultural setting. Most of our moms were twirlers when they were our age. They have passed the sport down to us and expect us to eventually pass it down to us. This is a tradition that has been going on ever since the sport was created and is also a big reason why it continues to grow each year. Baton moms and coaches are their own tight knit family that will be there for each other and help each other out whenever needed. On top of having this tradition to uphold and pass down are many other expectations. As a girl in baton you are expected to put makeup on when competing and are to try and out shine the rest of the competition. A lot of Rhine stones and glitter are needed to make their daughters shine and too create their costumes. Fake hair and attitudes are two other must haves in order to be considered as one of the best. All of this creates the cultural face of baton twirling.
Ultimately even though the twirlers get all the credit it is the coach who is most important. Our coaches and their coaches before them are the base for what the baton culture has become today. Even though everyone will remember the performances they also must realize that the coaches and baton community are the sole reason for why they get to enjoy this sport. This video demonstrates how great coaching and baton expectations both have to be present for a good performance to happen. You can have a great coach but without the glitz and glammer the performance wouldn't be the same. Just as if you looked the prettiest but couldn't put down a great routine there would be nothing for the audience to remember.
