Cairo is located on the banks and islands of the Nile River in the north of Egypt. West of Giza, in the desert, are three large pyramids, including the Great Pyramid of Giza. Approximately 18 km to the south of modern Cairo is the site of the ancient Egyptian city of Memphis and adjoining necropolis of Saqqara.
The Western Desert covers about 700,000 square kilometers (equivalent in size to Texas) and accounts for about two-thirds of Egypt's land area. This immense desert to the west of the Nile spans the area from the Mediterranean Sea south to the Sudanese border.
The Sinai Peninsula lies between the Mediterranean Sea to the north and the Red Sea to the south, forming a land bridge from Africa to Southwest Asia. Its area is about 60.000 km².
The Sinai is a magical and biblical desert with as highlights Mount Sinai, where Moses got the ten commands and the Saint Catherine's Monastery with the chapel of the burning bush.
