On July 24th 1969 the USS Hornet CVS-12 recovered the astronauts and the capsule of Apollo 11 in the Pacific Ocean at 13° 19N and 169° 9W. President Richard Nixon was there to greet them and welcome them back to earth. Astronauts Michael Collins, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were kept in a mobile quarantine Airstream trailer aboard the USS Hornet. The Hornet + 3.
My father-in-law, Dr Leonard C Jones, professor of engineering at SIUE, supervised the physical sciences section of the Lunar Receiving Laboratory at Houston, TX where the moon rocks and core samples were studied.
