- Chohanga 2 -
for any solo instrument and percussion (2006)
written for the Barton Workshop
The solo instrument part can be played in any octave.
The percussion part consists of two sounds - one low, one high - the percussionist can use one instrument that produces two different sounds (ie. chnanggu) or two instruments with different sounds
If the solo instrument is unable to produce a certain sound (ie. glissando or 1/4 tone), the player should make a sound on the instrument that approximates what is notated.
If a string instrument is used, bowing is free.
The text in the piece is not to be read aloud, but to be meditated on while preparing to play and while performing.
Each player plays in a slow tempo; each might play independently of the other.
Two players need not begin to play at the same time.
The percussionist must finish playing at least 2 minutes before the soloist.
Dynamics for the melodic instrument are recommended by the composer - yet the player might decide on different dynamics.
The percussionist plays as softly as possible.
