Supervisor: Digital Frontier Inc.
The movie Summer Wars premiered 10 years ago in summer and it depicts OZ, a virtual and futuristic world. VRoid, launched in 2018, was established to create a world where people can have their own unique characters and lead interesting lives.
The two works aim toward the same dream, and after 10 years they are going to meet this very summer, when the world of avatars will become reality.
This project enables users to experience the world of OZ on VRoid Mobile, a smartphone application scheduled to be released by pixiv in July 2019, using the 3D avatars that they created. There will also be events that lead up to August 1, the date of Summer Wars’ 10th anniversary, and special presents for users who joined this project.
The year 2019 marks the 10th year since Summer Wars, a movie directed by Mamoru Hosoda, premiered. This year, Studio Chizu has chosen the theme UPDATE for Studio Chizu in Summer 2019 Summer Wars 10th Anniversary Project and has hosted various events. The goal of the project OZ on VRoid powered by pixiv introduced in this article is to share “a future in which the virtual world and avatars become a part of our daily life” with not only fans of Summer Wars but also the people who are just getting to know the world of Summer Wars through this project. Please look forward to this project.
■Leading up to OZ on VRoid powered by pixiv
A comment by Norio Kiyomizu, VRoid Producer
The characters in the movie Summer Wars bustle about and enjoy their lives in the virtual world of OZ using unique avatars that do not necessarily look like the people’s actual selves.
OZ is a dream for everyone who is engaged in the AR/VR industry. It is also a compass needle that points toward the future that we ought to take.
I think the service group of VRoid is an indispensable element to make that future come true because VRoid enables anyone to play and go anywhere using their favorite characters.
It has been 10 years since that summer. VRoid will reproduce the world of OZ in this project and I hope a lot of people can experience the potential of the future that we have pictured thanks to it.
A comment by Yuichiro Saito, Studio Chizu Producer
Welcome to the world of Summer Wars OZ.
Summer Wars is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year and pixiv has created the virtual world OZ for us.
pixiv is a social media world where a lot of people from all over the world draw, create new things, communicate with each other and create more new things through that communication.
As an anime, Summer Wars contains a series of countless drawings.
I hope many people will create illustrations after experiencing the virtual world OZ and use those illustrations to enable even more people to enjoy the world of Summer Wars OZ.
Please look forward to the project.
