Patient-specific simulations performed in the Biomedical Simulation Laboratory reveal the hostile nature of blood flow within an aneurysm, which cannot be detected with current imaging techniques alone. This visualization demonstrates the difficult choices confronted when a patient is diagnosed with a brain aneurysm, and how computer simulations may aid clinicians and their patients in risk assessment and treatment planning. After introducing the clinical problem of deciding how to treat an aneurysm, we show the steps involved in generating patient-specific blood flow dynamics using a combination of CT imaging and computational fluid dynamics (CFD).
