In the fall of 2010, HCM Strategists and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation commenced a series of conversations among institutional leaders dedicated to "Beating the Odds" and increase access to college and the success of students typically underrepresented in higher education: low-income, minority, and adult students.
The first conversations made clear that several factors are integral to a president's ability to magnify and maintain student success. Institutional efforts must: help students prepare for the rigors of college; focus on retention through student support systems; find new and innovative ways for students to access postsecondary education; and show leadership in creating a culture of completion.
