Ohio Dominican University (ODU) hosted Reverend Walter Everett and Bishop Frederick F. Campbell, D.D., Ph.D. for their lecture and discussion on the death penalty titled: A Presentation On Capital Punishment: Reflections by Reverend Walter Everett And Bishop Frederick Campbell - A Journey Through Pain, To Forgiveness, To Redemption.
The discussion was moderated by ODU President, Dr. Peter Cimbolic, who was instrumental in organizing the event.
Walter Everett, a retired pastor of the United Methodist Church of Hartford, Conn., is an advocate of the anti-death penalty movement and is active in numerous abolition and restorative justice organizations. He has been interviewed for national radio programs as well as in publications, such as Rolling Stone Magazine. In 1987, Rev. Everett's son, Scott, 24, was shot and killed.
Since then, he has forgiven his son's killer, Mike Carlucci, and even spoke on Carlucci's behalf during a parole hearing, which helped him obtain early release. Rev. Everett and Carlucci also have spoken together at universities, churches and community groups about the healing power of forgiveness.
