Heavily-favored Thorondor responded when challenged in the stretch and went on to a narrow victory in the $44,400 feature on Friday at Hollywood Park.
A 4-year-old gelded son of Ferrari out of the Prized mare Prize Possession, Thorondor won for the second time in six starts, defeating Soul Candy by a neck. The 3-5 choice ran the 1 1/16 miles on turf in 1:41.88.
Leading jockey Tyler Baze, who has 11 winners through the first six days of the meet, was aboard for owners J.F. Ernenwein and Chris and Charlotte Wrather, who bred Thorondor in California. Baze also won the opener with Look To The Sky.
Unplaced in his only previous start at Hollywood Park when debuting on Dec. 21, 2008, Thorondor tracked the pace set by Trulymetsmydaddy into the first turn and on the backside.
He moved up to engage for the lead entering the stretch and was immediately challenged on the outside by Jacks Wild. Thorondor looked ready to surrender the advantage, but found enough in the final sixteenth of a mile to score.
The victory in the optional claimer restricted to California breds increased Thorondors earnings to $70,956. He paid $3.20, $2.40 and $2.10. Soul Candy, who rallied from last in the field of six, returned $4.80 and $3.20.
The show price on Jacks Wild, who faltered a bit late and wound up a head behind Soul Candy, was $3.
