Composed of ice and dust, comets are often compared to dusty snowballs as they travel through the solar system. Almost all comets spend the majority of their lives in the Oort Cloud, a icy region beyond the reaches of Pluto.

Discovered in September 2012 by Russian astronomers Vitali Nevski and Artyom Novichonok, ISON will travel within 680,000 miles (1.1 million kilometers) above the sun's surface on Nov. 28 but with the latest public announcement video then there lays some confusion with, will comet ISON hit the Sun or the Earth. The question on everyone's mind is how it will respond.
Because this is ISON's first visit to the inner solar system, the results of the interaction are still up for grabs. Comets that have shown signs of a promising show have fizzled out in the past.
ISON appears unlikely to survive journey to the sun.

Earth will pass close to the orbit of Comet ISON C/2012 S1 on 14-15 January 2014 and may become bombarded by a Comet ISON meteor shower.
¨ Comet ISON can become brighter than the full moon ¨
In December Comet ISON C/2012 S1 will still be visible from Earth, possibly with a long Comet ISON tail.
Comet ISON C/2012 S1 can reach Comet ISON magnitude -17, (brighter than the full moon).
