In 1955, the Bell System was contracted by the American and Canadian governments to create a line of radar stations along the far-northern Canadian shore.

This is their progress report from 1955.

The system was called the DEW Line, the Distant Early Warning Line, and was intended to detect Soviet bombers flying across the North Pole.
