Photographs by Krisanne Johnson. Happiness Dlamini is an MSF patient on treatment for multi drug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) in Swaziland. The treatment for MDR-TB requires taking less effective drugs with terrible side effects for up to two years. Happiness has 21 months of treatment remaining. With photos from photographer Krisanne Johnson, Happiness tells her story of daily isolation, pain, and fortitude.
We urgently need to solve the immediate problems of supply and high prices of the drugs available now for MDR-TB, especially since a new test has been developed that will allow us to diagnose patients more easily. Another urgent need is for better drugs that will treat the disease more quickly and with fewer burdens on patients.
Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders, or MSF, is an independent medical humanitarian aid organization. For more information on this story and to learn more about MSF or Doctors Without Borders, please visit msf.org to find the MSF web site in your home country.
