"If You Go Away" is a song in English based upon the French song "Ne me quitte pas" (1959), written by Jacques Brel. The English lyrics were written by Rod McKuen as part of a larger project to translate Brel's work. "If You Go Away" is considered a pop standard and has been recorded by many artists, including Greta Keller, for whom some say McKuen wrote the lyrics. Frank Sinatra, Tom Jones, Brenda Lee, Violetta Villas, Shirley Bassey, Daliah Lavi, Marc Almond, Emilíana Torrini, Neil Diamond, Scott Walker, Farhad Mehrad, Dusty Springfield, Madonna and Cyndi Lauper have also recorded versions of it, with several of the numerous versions becoming hits and achieving success on the charts.
In 1974, Canadian musician Terry Jacks, after a suggestion by Brel, recorded a version of "If You Go Away" which was released as a single. Jacks had his biggest hit with another Brel cover, "Seasons in the Sun". It reached a peak of number 68 on the Billboard Hot 100 - the same peak Damita Jo reached with her version.

Terry Jacks is a Canadian singer, songwriter, record producer and environmentalist.
His family having relocated to Vancouver, Jacks took up guitar in his teens and at 18 joined a Vancouver, British Columbia, band called The Chessmen. The group had 4 Top Ten hits between 1964 and 1966. following The Chessmen, Jacks teamed up with singer Susan Pesklevits
Jacks and Pesklevits married in 1968 and eked out a living until the band burst onto the national charts in 1969 with their debut album, Which Way You Goin' Billy? which was written and produced by Terry Jacks. The 45rpm single went to No. 1 in Canada and reached No. 2 on the Billboard charts in the United States, selling over three million copies. The single was the first million-selling record ever recorded in British Columbia. It won a Juno Award for best performance while Jacks earned a Juno for best producer of a single. The Poppy Family won a Juno for best group and immediately followed up with a second album, Poppy Seeds, but it did not match the success of the first album. The Poppy Family did place two other singles in the top five in Canadian and the U.S. Top 50, "That's Where I Went Wrong" (No. 29, in 1970) and "Where Evil Grows" (No. 45 on Billboard, 1971). Terry then released the solo single "Concrete Sea" which went into the top 10 in Canada.
Terry had travelled alone to LA to work with the Beach Boys to record the song "Seasons In The Sun" but the project was never finished so Jacks decided to record the song himself. Released in 1973 on his own record label, Goldfish Records, the song became the largest-selling international single by a Canadian artist and earned Jacks four Juno Awards. "Seasons in the Sun" is Rod McKuen's 1965 adaptation of "Le moribond", a 1962 original by Belgian singer Jacques Brel; for his version, Jacks made some modifications to the lyrics and melody. In the United States, in Great Britain and in Germany, in these countries it was released on Bell Records, the song went to No. 1 on the charts.
In the late 1970s, Jacks married Margaret Zittier and gradually withdrew from the music world. The couple had a daughter, Holly Michelle Jacks, in 1985 and Jacks became involved in the environmental movement, focusing on pulp mill pollution issues in Canada. Jacks' environmental work has earned him several awards including one from the United Nations and the Western Canada Wilderness Committee. He has worked in documentary film and video, producing several shorts on environmental themes including The Tragedy of Clearcutting, The Southern Chilcotin Mountains and The Warmth of Love (The Four Seasons of Sophie Thomas). The video production The Faceless Ones earned an Environmental Gold Award from the New York International Film Festival.
Lyrics:
If you go away, On a summer day
Then you might as well, Take the sun away
All the birds that flew, In the summer sky
When our love was knew , And our hearts were high
When the day was young , And the nights were long
And the moon stood still, For the night bird's song
If you go away , If you go away, If you go away
But if you stay , I'll make you a day
Like no day has been, Or will be again
We'll sail the sun, We'll ride on the rain
We'll talk to the trees, We'll fly with the wind
But if you go away, When I love you so
There'll be nothing left, In the world you know
Just an empty moon, Full of empty space
Like the empty look, I see on your face
If you go away, If you go away, If you go away
But if you stay, I'll make you a day
Like no day has been, Or will be again
We'll sail the sun, We'll ride on the rain
We'll talk to the trees, We'll fly with the wïnd
If you go away, If you go away, If you go away
