The Asia-Pacific preliminary rounds of NTD Television's 2012 International Classical Chinese Dance competition have concluded in Hong Kong over the weekend.
Despite intimidation from the Mainland Chinese authorities, 14 contestants competed in the spirit of the competition—to promote the best of traditional Chinese culture.
NTD's Hong Kong Dance Competition Chief Judge, Zhang Tiejun calls the dancers "admirable."
[Zhang Tiejun, Chief Judge, NTD Dance Competition in Hong Kong]:
"They all came together in the competition, their states were very good—they had a lot of self-belief. Everyone was putting forth great effort in the name of traditional Chinese culture. On this point, I really admire them."
Spokesperson for the dance competition, Vina Lee said that a revival of traditional Chinese culture is something the Chinese regime fears.
[Vina Lee, Dance Competition Spokesperson]:
"We talk about the heavenly-imparted culture of [China]. So the Chinese Communist Party fears this. It doesn't fear the competition itself, it fears this goal—to revive traditional culture."
Association members from a notably pro-CCP organization, the Hong Kong Youth Care Association Limited tried to disrupt the competition. They hooted, hollered, and held banners.
The leader of a Hong Kong Dance company, Xiong Li, was there. He was dismissive of the association members.
[Xiong Li, Head of Xiong Li Wushu Dance Troupe]:
"Their methods were a kind of political hooliganism—a kind of political truncheon. This is really something to be ashamed of. I think they're bringing the culture of violence used in the Mainland over to Hong Kong."
Chinese authorities have gone to great lengths to prevent mainland Chinese dancers from participating in NTD's classical dance competition.
Judges for the competition—some of them from the New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts dance company—reported being followed as soon as they landed in Hong Kong.
