Angry Video Game Nerd (Episode 86)

The Legend of Zelda, one of the most revolutionary games of it's time. Pretty much bringing the adventure genre into existence, it was a masterpiece of it's time. But, one game with a similar structure TECHNICALLY came out first. On the PC, none the less. Hydlide, released in 1984 by T&E Soft, however, teaches gamers one valuable thing; just because it came first doesn't make it better. The version reviewed here is the NES port from 1989 . Watch as James Rolfe/AVGN experiences the horror himself, and see if you can bear it too.
Some of the worst things in this game include NO ATTACK BUTTON, awful music, lousy gameplay, blocky graphics, basically everything that can go wrong with a video game goes wrong in Hydlide. If video games could make you vomit, Hydlide would do that to you. Take our word, it's that bad.

But really, what you said got me thinking. Imagine this: back in the late 80's, there was a poor family. The youngest son was utterly obsessed with the NES, the only present he ever received. He liked Super Mario Bros and Duck Hunt, but playing them over, over and over again was getting old. He became extremely excited upon hearing about Legend of Zelda at school, hearing his friends talking about this seemingly amazing action-adventure game.  One day, this little boy's family decided to go out. In the window of a store, he saw...the Legend of Zelda cartridges, merchandise, everything! He pointed at the window and pleaded his parents to "take a look with him" (of course, he wanted to buy it). Knowing they couldn't afford it, but not wanting to disappoint their poor little son, they decided to go along with it.  After realizing that the price was way too high for them, they offered to look in the bargain bin for another game. The little boy dug through the bin, until reaching a copy of Hydlide, which looked like a fun, exciting adventure, just like the Legend of Zelda! Upon checking the price, his parents agreed to get it. Oh, what this kid was in for.
Holy crap, so I'm not the only one who thought that was Indiana Jones...
Super Hydlide for the Sega Genesis was actually pretty decent.
